Module summary

This module continues to develop the student’s academic and research skills. The student taking this module will continue to develop an evidence-based approach to learning and decision making. The module also includes activities in relation to delivery of care as part of a multidisciplinary team.The content of the module relates to the academic knowledge and skills expected of a dental therapist. This module builds on teaching delivered in year two and links to professional practice.

Objectives

To provide the student with both the academic knowledge and skills required of a Dental Therapist.
The module aims to encourage the student to apply and build on knowledge gained from prior teaching.
The student will apply their academic skills and clinical experience to problem solving related to the provision of holistic patient care within the dental team.
This module follows on from teaching in year 2 introducing subjects which are more challenging and complex nature.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the principles of evidence based dentistry and how these apply to the practice of dental therapy.
2. Explain and apply the academic knowledge underpinning the practice of dentistry as a dental therapist.
3. Relate an in-depth understanding of the dental specialties and the role of the dental therapist in delivery of integrated patient care.

Syllabus

Underpinning science and evidence supporting the practice as a dental hygienist and developing academic skills such as problem solving and evidence based decision making.
Professional requirements within the role of the dental therapist will be developed to cover topics such as :
• Vulnerable adults
- Dementia awareness
- Management of the aging population
- Topics introduced earlier in the course will be explored, investigated and applied in greater detail including:
- Oncology
- Child centred dentistry
- Restorative dentistry
- Orthodontics
- Sedation
- Multi-disciplinary management

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students are provided with formative feedback throughout the module. Students with particular difficulties with their progress during the module are encouraged to seek advice from the modular team.
Group verbal feedback will be provided by the facilitator during Problem Based Learning sessions and written feedback following the presentation associated with each scenario.
Seminar participation will gauge general progress and allow identification of any learning issues that need immediate attention.
Group feedback will be provided on the summative examination, and individual feedback can be provided on request.

Formative feedback on progress during Problem Based Learning group work is provided by the facilitator. Written feedback is provided following the group presentations. Marks will be awarded for the group, not for the individual student.
