Module summary

This course will focus on issues of anxiety and stress, both in ourselves and in others, especially our patients. Some of the material was briefly introduced in year one Anxiety and Pain Management and the year 2 Social Science related to dentistry module and is closely linked with Communication Skills. There will be opportunities to link the issues in this course to your clinical practice through the assessment of dental anxiety in your patients using simple questionnaires and reflecting on the changes in patient management which may be necessary in light of the results.A workshop will enable practice in behavioural methods of controlling dental anxiety in patients. A second workshop will introduce hypnotic techniques for self hypnosis and management of dental anxietyThere will be opportunities to assess the amount of stress and anxiety you and your colleagues suffer as dental students and to learn methods of controlling it in a workshop session.Your PPD file will be used for you to reflect on your coping skills before, during and after the course and your use of the stress control methods you will experienceSummative assessment will be a case report on a patient you have treated.

Objectives

The objectives of this course are for students to have a broad understanding of the psychology and health issues surrounding stress, both in the general population and specifically in relation to their own stress levels as students and following qualification.

They will be made aware of the dangers of not dealing with their own stress and of sources and methods of help available to them.

For students to develop their understanding of anxiety in dentistry, in particular dental anxiety in patients and their own anxiety as students. They will apply methods of anxiety measurement and behavioural techniques for the control of anxiety in dental patients.
