Module summary

This optional module will provide the opportunity for a period of study abroad. Visiting students will gain cultural awareness in terms of the provision of oral healthcare in the context of the different socio-economic cultures and context. They will gain an appreciation of attitude in regard to oral health in the UK, what it is like to be a ‘stranger‘, observe and participate in the work of a dentist, including clinical care through clinical placement. It will lead to enhanced self-management and critical reflection on their own approach. It is envisaged that student will spend part of an academic term abroad. This is a dummy module. No credit is awarded. Assessment will be by the partner institution, upon return.

Objectives

The module will aim to provide students with:

A supportive framework within which they will experience of living and studying in a different culture.

The opportunity to develop their independence and time management skills.

A location where their dental knowledge and clinical skill will be broadened and deepened, whilst keeping in touch with life in Leeds.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students will be better able to:

Appreciate the practice of dentistry in different environments, clinically, as well as socially and politically.

Understand their own personal strengths and those characteristics that would benefit from further development.

Demonstrate effective communication skills.

Reflect on their own life, motivation and experience.

Skills outcomes
Confidence
Social and Cultural Sensitivity

Syllabus

The day-to-day content of this module is determined, in large part, by the host institution. In terms of Leeds, determined content, an introductory lecture will set the scene in terms of expectations and there will be briefings organised locally and in concert with the Study Abroad Office. The module will be offered in year 4 to highly motivated and highly achieving students only, through competition in the early part of year 3. There will, in addition to the requirement of attendance, participation and clinical practice determined by the host, be Leeds-based requirements. A clinical diary will be completed in relation to patients seen on placement but submitted to Leeds and lectures delivered in the relevant term will need to be assimilated through the VLE. It may be necessary, depending on the precise time of the exchange for students to return for examinations and attend for ‘catch up sessions‘.

For example for an exchange taking place in the 2nd term, the CMS 1 (DSUR3301) written examination will be taken whilst on placement and lectures delivered in the relevant term will need to be assimilated through the VLE; the clinical diary will be completed in relation to patients seen on placement but submitted to Leeds; there will need to be ‘catch-up‘ sessions in relation to Leeds based placement at GPs and in the Ambulance Service and in the theory of Complete Denture construction. A return visit to Leeds will be necessary to take the Clinical Practice 4 DSUR5050M OSCE components. (This is the current arrangement).

For an exchange in the 3rd term it might be necessary, depending on the time of the exchange for student to attend their oral and maxillofacial hospital placement, as part of their CAD module (DSUR3310) at an alternative time in the year, as the clinical diary of this placement is a progressional component of the module.

For most exchanges the students will submit their reflective clinical diary log electronically, on immediate return from placement. For an exchange in term 4.2 the clinical diary will be related to patients seen whilst abroad, but submitted to Leeds electronically as these are the requirements of the concurrent CMS 1, DSUR3301. If the elements of coursework are failed, the reflective log will need to be resubmitted, following feedback. The Powerpoint presentation resume of 20 slides will be arranged to be delivered to the study abroad coordinators and prospective students in the year(s) below.
