Module summary

This module spans 2 years, from September in Year 4 through to February of Year 5. There are 10 hours of taught lectures associated with this module to support the student to develop and deliver a research project. The student identifies a supervisor and after a discussion and a literature search submits a Project Proposal. Once feedback is obtained the student will complete an ethical approval process (for projects where this is appropriate) before they are able to commence their research data collection. In Year 5 students undertake their research project and produce a final individual report in the form of a journal article, putting their newly acquired skills into practice. Although all assessment submissions for this module must be completed individually, we advise students work in small groups (2-6 people) on a shared topic area with the same supervisor. Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to.
Develop and undertake a research project culminating in a project proposal, ethical approvals (if appropriate) and a written report. To enable this, the student will be equipped with an understanding of research methodology and ethics.

Learning outcomes
1. Systematically search, identify and critically appraise relevant literature to identify gaps in research evidence to formulate an appropriate research question.
2. Effectively communicate, through scientific writing, and conduct a piece of research that demonstrates a critical awareness of ethical issues and the development of specialist and in-depth knowledge of a subject area.
3. Plan and execute a research investigation using appropriate methodology and to critically analyse the results in order to draw valid conclusions.
4. Demonstrate the independent learning ability required for continuing professional development through exhibiting good organisational and time management skills; working autonomously in the planning and implementation of tasks, and coping with complex and unpredictable situations as they arise.

Syllabus

- Undertake a literature review to identify an area of research that you are interested in. You will then be able to formulate an appropriate research question, which will form the basis of your project proposal.
- Understand the need for ethical approval and apply for Dental Student Ethics Committee (DSEC) approval, where appropriate.
- Plan and execute a research investigation using an appropriate methodology. On completion of your data collection, you will critically analyse the results in order to draw valid conclusions.
- Effectively communicate, through the scientific writing of a journal article, your research. This will include a robustly executed literature review, which demonstrates a critical awareness of moral and ethical issues and the development of specialist and in-depth knowledge of a subject area.

Private study

Students will conduct literature reviews of the topic of their research project and utilise this private study time to conduct their research. Students will organise themselves within research topic groups to share core information amongst themselves on different methodological approaches to answer research questions.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Each student project has a supervisor who works with the student across the 2 years. The students are given feedback during supervision meetings, and we also have a lecture series and access to the module leaders by email and via meetings so that students can discuss their progress and any issues they are having conducting their research. There is a discussion board which helps gain an understanding of what students are struggling with and we pre-populate this with FAQs from previous years to help students get answers to queries quickly. After each assessment (1500 word proposal and final journal write up 4000) the students can approach either their supervisor(s) or module team for formative feedback.
