Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- diagnose caries, plan appropriate non-operative care and manage the oral care of children within an holistic framework;
- fissure seal and place preventive resin restorations, approximal and incisal tip restorations in children;
- place preformed stainless steel crowns, where indicated, in children;
- have knowledge of trauma and its management in both dentitions;
- carry out an orthodontic assessment, indicating treatment need;
- manage orthodontic emergencies;
- discuss orthodontic treatments with patients and their parents, as appropriate;
- be aware of their own limitations and the limitations of orthodontic treatments and make orthodontic referrals;
- extract teeth and roots;
- undertake minor surgery to soft tissue and bone under supervision;
- diagnose and plan the management of acute infections;
- apply the principles of medicine and surgery in diagnosis and management of maxillo-facial trauma, malignant disease, oro-facial anomalies and oral mucosal disease;
- take, process and interpret radiographic films used in general dental practice;
- diagnose and plan treatment for dental emergencies, with assistance;
- gain more advanced experience of the recognition and control of pain and anxiety for dentistry, including inhalational and intravenous sedation;
- treat edentulous patients, providing complete dentures to restore form and function.

Syllabus
In years 4 and 5, clinical and professional requirements of the award move upwards from the Bachelor level and students must demonstrate increasingly autonomous, self-critical clinical practice in preparation for the unsupervised practice of dentistry upon graduation.
- This course integrates theory with practical and clinical experience relating to human disease, child-centred dentistry (paediatric dentistry and orthodontics), complex adult dentistry (including consideration of occlusion, the edentulous state and its restoration, surgery, implant-retained prostheses).
- It requires the development of finesse in decision-making so that diagnoses and treatment planning, for example, become synthesised and individually tailored to patient problems and needs.
- The aspects of clinical dentistry covered previously are re-visited and developed further, with increasing reliance being placed upon the individual student to lead the process.
- Competence tests in clinical disciplines will form a theme throughout this year of study: rigorous processes and practice will be required.
- Some of the clinical experience will be gained off-site in purpose-built clinical facilities.
-Students will undertake Medical Emergencies training.

Online time limited assessment with a duration of 48 hours.
