Module summary
This module will lead students through evidence-based learning from bench to clinical practice.Objectives
Overall aims of the module; by the end of the module the student will be able to1. Describe the principles of an evidence based-approach to learning, clinical and professional practice and decision making (FFY).
2. Recognise and evaluate the impact of new techniques and technologies in clinical practice (FFY).

- To develop a deep understanding of the term 'evidenced-based approach'.
- To apply evidence- based learning in clinical and professional practice.
- To show the application of evidence based knowledge of a particular research field.
- To be able to assess and understand the real impact of new techniques/ technologies in clinical practice.
- To understand and engage in clinical audit and governance.
Skills outcomes
Critiquing research papers.
Defining impact factor and the relationship to research quality.

This module will consist of lecture updates in several or all of the following areas;
- Biomineralisation Research.
- Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Research.
- Microbiology and Cell Biology Research.
- Applied Clinical Dental Research.
- Dental Public Health & Health Services Research.
- Dental Education & Scholarship Research.
- Critical analysis of papers in these areas.

Independent learning - total 46 hours; 4 hours associated with each lecture pre- and post-lecture reading. 12 hours for development of questions (2 hours per lecture title). Preparation time for open paper assessment - 10 hours.Private study time - 29.5 hours.
Group learning; total 12 hours. 6 hours for agreeing questions to be submitted. 6 hours to agree marks allocations for group members from overall group mark.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students' performance will be monitored over the course of the module by considering the individual marks they receive following submission of the questions. Poorly performing students will be interviewed as soon as possible after poor performance is identified. Any problems will be dealt with as appropriate.Methods of assessment

Students will be given an article to critically review in their own time. This will be handed in for marking after a specified period of time. Groups will be awarded marks by individual tutors. The group will divide the mark and award them to group members based on individual merit, as is currently done for IOE projects in level1.
