Module summary

The ability to read, interpret and apply the large volume of relevant, published literature requires an understanding of research methods and statistics. The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the principles underlying independent research. We will cover mixed methods of application, including quantitative and qualitative approaches of design. There will be information on how to critically appraise the literature, further elucidation of the principles of evidence-based care, how to approach issues such as sampling, measurement, bias, data collection, analysis and reporting.

Objectives

This module represents a compulsory component of the MSc and Professional Doctorate programmes in Clinical Dentistry. It aims to provide students with the opportunity to enhance their professional skills in Dentistry through developing skills that underpin research practice, to enhance their research skills and performance in the Research Project module and to receive hands-on training in the practical aspects of applying for ethical permission to carry out research on human subjects and material. In addition to providing opportunities to learn to use library and on-line facilities, the module will enable students to develop an understanding of good practice and the ethics and philosophy of research. The module also aims to provide students with some insight into intellectual property and to develop commercial awareness and knowledge of the pathways from research to commercial application of findings.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module students will:
- be able to search and report on scientific literature;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of issues related to ethics in research to understand the differences between audit, service evaluation and research;
- have gained some experience and insight into the practical procedures involved in applying for ethical permission for research;
- be able to outline the principles of data protection
- be able to produce a patient information sheet and consent form;
- have been introduced to the principles of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies used in Dental research.

Specialist databases and information retrieval (e.g. gene and protein sequence databases; potential for patient databases)

Cross infection control in Dentistry

Research methodology in Dentistry

Introduction to Systematic reviews
