Module summary
This module comprises teaching and clinical training. Students will continue to work under close, consultant supervision on consultant clinics, trauma clinics, and general anaesthesia sessions in the One day Unit at LDI and in the Clarendon Wing Theatres in the LGI.Students will be expected to assimilate clinical information of complex paediatric cases to construct specialist level treatment plans. Skills and knowledge gained from Paediatric Dentistry 1 and 2 will be used by students to do this. The clinical treatment planning is reinforced during the Case Based Discussion. The students will utilise their reflection and self-assessment skills to score themselves on their participation in these tutorial sessions.Clinical Governance continues with students completing their Clinical Governance project [audit/service review] and presenting the findings to the Department with a verbal presentation.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be know how to ...• to relate academic teaching from Paediatric Dentistry 1 and Paediatric Dentistry 2 to the clinical situation
• discriminate the relevant aspects of assessment to formulate appropriate treatment plans
• to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary dental team and to provide leadership to the paediatric dental team to manage children with complex medical and dental needs
• to complete a clinical audit and/or service review cycle
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Critically use knowledge from Paediatric Dentistry 1 and Paediatric Dentistry 2 in order to progress to specialist level clinical practice
• Demonstrate the ability to synthesise and interpret relevant and appropriate clinical information to provide possible solutions to clinical problems in Paediatric Dentistry.
• Proactively formulate ideas and hypotheses and to develop, implement and execute plans and the means by which to evaluate these and predict their outcome;
• Formulate treatment plans for prevention and restorative dental care for children reflecting knowledge at a specialist level.
• To demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge and mastery of contemporary techniques relevant to Paediatric Dentistry and to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of concepts and information at the forefront of Paediatric Dentistry

Syllabus
These include principles of: clinical patient assessment (including the collection and assimilation of relevant and appropriate clinical information) to provide possible solutions to clinical problems and the appropriate referral of patients when beyond the skill of the operator. Emphasis will be placed on taking a proactive and self-reflective role in working and of developing professional relationships with all individuals involved in patient care. The importance of team working (including multi-disciplinary team working) will be stressed together with other aspects of being a professional e.g. developing mastery of contemporary techniques, lifelong learning and awareness and ability to deal with issues such as clinical governance and audit.

Private study
The students spend considerable time preparing their Case Based Discussions [at least 2 hours per tutorial]; preparing for their Clinical Governance project presentation [20 hours] and revising for their end of semester examinations [20 hours].The students will continue to have access to the MOOGS to enhance their clinical skills

Unseen exam: MCQ and EMQ - online time limited assessment with a duration of 48 hours. Oral Examination: 3X unseen cases, 20 minute oral examination on each, 20 minutes to prepare the cases The Unseen and Oral Examination are not compensatable and must be passed in order to pass the module The verbal presentation and tutorial performance are compensatable against each other.
