Module summary
This module uses a combination of methods of delivery to develop the knowledge and skills required to manage, successfully, a series of challenging endodontic problems and the immediate and longer-term management of dento-alveolar trauma. Content will be provided by experienced specialists who will help you to both deepen your knowledge of the related, often complex subject matter and refine strategies for the delivery of care. Objectives
The aims of this module are:• To encourage deep understanding and critical reflection on the current evidence base in endodontology and the principles of successful management of dental trauma
• To prioritise and agree a range of clinically-relevant patient management modalities in endodontics and for patients who have suffered dental trauma
• To encourage the formulation of accurate diagnoses, construction of appropriate treatment plans and projection of successful prognoses
Learning outcomes
On completion of the module the student will be able to:
1. Critically reflect on in-depth analysis of the current literature in endodontology and dental trauma, synthesising the outcomes
2. Devise and apply evidence-based rationale for root canal treatment and pulp therapy
3. Formulate accurate diagnoses and treatment plans for structured, simulated and real cases
4. Devise and evaluate a strategy for optimal treatment outcomes, judged against current literature and available clinical guidelines
Skills outcomes
The need to provide high quality endodontic treatment is a daily requirement in the practising life of the general dental practitioner. Dental trauma occurs less frequently but needs rapid and appropriate management. The scientific knowledge gained in this module will underpin the student’s development of advanced ability in these disciplines.
Syllabus
• Detailed, up-to-date science in relation to endodontology and the practice of endodontics in challenging cases (e.g. teeth with significant root curvature or sclerosis)
• In-depth analysis of dental trauma (causes, presentation, diagnosis, treatment planning, short- and long-term measures of management, the evaluation / prognostication of success and potential failure)

Private study
Independent LearningStudents will work through simulated clinical cases, which will incorporate self-assessment, links to research papers and clinical guidelines. The learning from these cases will be explored and validated by case based discussion groups.
Private Study
Students will follow up references and texts recommended in the lectures, tutorials as well as online materials, and use the information gathered as a basis for developing their own reading and synthesis of the subject matter.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Progress will be monitored by performance and engagement in the group discussions and seminars. The poster presentations will be assessed summatively but feedback will be given. Methods of assessment
