Objectives

The module integrates the teaching of academic study skills with subject content from the field of education. It should promote development of knowledge and skill appropriate to future study of Education at undergraduate level.

The module aims to stimulate thinking about the complex nature of education through study of a range of theoretical perspectives, consideration of students' own educational experiences and observation of educational practices in a variety of contexts from across the world.

The objectives of the module are to develop:
1. an awareness of the academic disciplines which inform the study of education and an understanding of key theoretical ideas and debates in the field.
2. students' ability to consider, question and evaluate educational processes using information presented through different media and from a variety of contexts.
3. students' academic study skills and ability to monitor and evaluate their own learning and educational progress.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
- Understand how educational processes are influenced by the cultural, political and historical contexts in which they are embedded.
- Identify and comment on key concepts in the field of education.
- Reflect upon and describe their own experiences of education with reference to key theoretical ideas.
- Present their ideas orally and in writing demonstrating understanding of key concepts in the field.
- Conduct and present the findings from a small scale investigation.
- Engage in independent study, collaborate and work with others in a group.
- Use ICT appropriately for study and presentation of work.
- Demonstrate awareness of, and some ability in using, appropriate academic study skills.


Syllabus

The content of the module provides an appropriate context for the development of academic skills for students planning further study in the School of Education. The selected topics reflect current interests in educational studies and are intended to offer an overview of the subject area.

The content of the module will include introductions to the study of:
1. The nature of education
2. Educational processes - theory, policy and practice
3. Factors affecting learning and achievement
4. Contexts for learning
5. Inclusive education
6. Education in the UK
7. Global issues in education
8. Education in a digital world
9. Education and employability
10. Lifelong learning.

Private study

The module will include a variety of pre-session and post session tasks to develop subject knowledge, ICT skills, academic study skills, independent and group learning abilities and to familiarise students with resources and support available in the university.

Students will be required to do additional private study, eg library searches, reading, information gathering, assignment preparation, contribution to on-line discussion, note taking and recording of reflections.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored through:

- Checking (during teaching sessions) students' performance of pre and post session tasks.
- Providing formative feedback following assessment of pre and post session tasks.
- Encouraging, and observing the level of, student participation in class learning activities.
- Monitoring the contributions of students to VLE discussion threads.
- Individual tutorials.
