Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- demonstrate an understanding of the nature of different types of research

- distinguish between different approaches to research

- analyse the implications of these different approaches to research problems in lifelong learning and post-compulsory education and training

- demonstrate a critical approach to research and research outcomes

- evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different research approaches, in relation to the eventual completion of a critical study/research project of their own.

Syllabus

This module will explore the nature of research and different approaches to research through the use of major themes in lifelong learning and post-compulsory education and training to generate key issues which are typical foci of research. Students will begin with an introduction to research and its relevance to lifelong learning and post-compulsory education and training. They will then focus on examples of research drawn from different areas of lifelong learning, and adopting different methodological stances. Where possible, witness sessions will be held with some of the authors of the research. The contested nature of research will be considered in relation to these examples. These examples of research will be debated and critiqued, helping students identify possible topics for own critical studies, together with possible research approaches.
