Module summary

This is an independent study module. It will enable students, who have chosen to study at a university abroad as part of their degree programme in the School of Education, to record and reflect upon their educational, cultural and social experiences with reference to the subject specialism of their degree programme. Guided by the module framework students will document their experiences in a 'Living Study Abroad Portfolio' available on the VLE. In a similar way to the Living CV in the Leeds for Life web site, students will be able to make the living Study Abroad Portfolio accessible to tutors and tutors will be able to request access. This arrangement will facilitate monitoring of an support for students studying at a distance and will help students maintain their identity as Leeds University students whilst studying abroad.

Objectives

This module will allow students to maximise the benefits of their study at a university abroad between Level 2 and Level 3 of their degree programme. In particular it aims to:
- provide a structure for recording and reflecting upon educational, cultural and personal experiences whilst studying abroad
- broaden and extend students' knowledge of degree subject specialisms whilst studying in a different geographical, cultural and linguistic context
- encourage and support opportunities to develop skills acquired during Levels 1 and 2 study
- develop personal understanding of the history, culture, language and social organisation of the country they are studying in
- provide documented evidence of learning and personal development in the Study Abroad year

Learning outcomes
Students completing this module should be able to identify, describe and discuss significant educational, cultural and social experiences of living and studying in another country. In particular they will have:
- an international perspective on relevant disciplinary understanding
- knowledge of the history, culture, language and social organisation of the study abroad country, gained through personal experiences

Skills outcomes
For Education undergraduates, this module will provide valuable support for comparing, contrasting and evaluating systems of education and an appreciation of the contextual factors that influence the system.

Where appropriate, the module will facilitate reflection on the development of foreign language skills.

As this is a 120 credit module covering study during an academic eyar it is expected that students will have the opportunity to develop an increased number of skills:
Communication Skills
Confidence
Creative Problem Solving
Critical Thinking
Flexibility
Independent Working
Initiative
Planning and Organisation
Professionalism
Research Skills
Self Awareness
Social and Cultural Sensitivity

Syllabus

At the university abroad, students will follow a taught course chosen to complement their degree programme. A minimum of two thirds of the taught course must be Education modules, Up to one third of the taught course can be from other disciplines. Students will not normally be allowed to study modules that duplicate content that has been studied or will be studied in the Leeds degree programme.

This module, EDUC9001, provides a framework for students to describe and reflect on their learning experiences abroad with reference to the subject specialism of their degree programme. It will, thus, foster internationalisation of relevant disciplinary knowledge. In addition, the framework includes opportunities to record and analyse the cultural and social experiences of living and studying in a different country. This should contribute to students' personal development and enhance their employability.
