Module summary

You will learn how to use writing to think, structure your thinking to promote analysis and then to communicate that thinking in effective and appropriate ways. This is a skill that can be transferred across a wide range of careers.This module explores existing writing, and considers the process through which this writing has been produced. You will be encouraged to explore your own thinking through writing and develop it into suitable forms to enable you to study and work analytically and creatively.

Objectives

This module aims to:

1. develop students’ understanding of the use of writing as an everyday practice
2. to develop students’ understanding of genre in writing
3. develop students’ ability to use writing to consider, think and communicate
4. develop students’ ability to produce appropriate writing for various contexts

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should:

1. understand the use of writing in creative and academic work through the production of written material associated with it (MO1, MO2)
2. understand the requirement to communicate differently in different contexts, through the medium of English and in written form (MO1, MO2, MO3)
3. develop the ability to analyse the written text for various purposes (MO1, MO2, MO3)
4. develop the ability to use writing for various purposes (MO3, MO4)

Private study

Students will listen to podcasts and relate the podcasts to the module theme and be able to discuss the content.
Students will be expected to read texts and analyse them to better be able to discuss them in class. Students will also be expected to undertake reflective and exploratory writing and analyse that.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will write short pieces of writing, partly in class and partly in private study which will be peer and tutor reviewed. Students will have an opportunity to receive feedback on this in tutorials.

Students compile a portfolio entitled `An analysis of the process of writing’. Students must submit a 500 word essay on the history and development of writing. The portfolio will include it 3 entries: freewriting on the topic, evidence of reflection/rewriting/editing, final 500 word essay.
