Pre-requisite qualifications

Successful completion of Level 2 French or equivalent, at the discretion of the Course Director
This module requires fluency in French and preference will normally be given to those students who have spent a year in a French-speaking environment

Module summary

Discussion of the theory and techniques of consecutive interpreting (memory training, note-taking, and presentation skills in French and English) will be integrated to the weekly practical classes, enabling the students to analyse and thus improve their individual performance. In the weekly practical classes the students will act as interpreters for a scenario/discussion between a French and an English native speaker on a topic for which documentation has been provided in advance. Students' performance is recorded and analysed in class.

Objectives

On completion of this module students will be expected to be able to interpret in the consecutive mode from and into French in a discussion/debate on a subject of which they have been given advance notice. Individual sections to be interpreted can be up to 1.5-2 minutes long. The aim of the module is not to train professional interpreters but to provide students with a discrete language skill that is often required in professional situations, formal and informal.

Syllabus

Students will gain practical experience in weekly sessions, each based around interpreting in a scenario involving a monoglot French speaker and a monoglot English speaker on a topic for which documentation has been provided in advance. Students' performance is recorded and analysed primarily in terms of interpreting technique. Interpreting theory will be introduced in the context of the practical sessions. The assessed essay is intended to show how the students relate theory to their individual experience, and the practical examination assesses their mastery of the techniques.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

At the end of each taught session, students' performance is analysed and discussed, with credit given for things which they have done well and suggestions made as to how they might improve and progress. Sound recordings of the sessions are then made available online for further study.

40% of the total marks available for the module are accounted for by a peer observation essay, to be submitted in the second half of Semester 2. To help them prepare for this, students are required to complete a practice essay in Semester 1, for which they are given detailed feedback by their tutors.
