Pre-requisite qualifications

- Successful completion of ITAL1030.
- Students wanting to take this module as a Discovery module need to get the permission of the Programme Manager for Italian before enrolling onto the module. Approval will be based on prior knowledge of Italian and any FLTU Italian modules which may have been taken.

Module summary

This module aims to take students rapidly from about A1-level standard to about A2-level standard in the use and understanding of written and spoken Italian. Teaching is by four one-hour language classes each week.As this module is compulsory for Italian degree students, the number of discovery module places may be limited. Students wishing to take discovery Italian from scratch are advised to consider modules offered by the LfA . These are advised especially to students wishing to take a more communicative and less intensive approach to learning Italian language.The textbook (see reading list for details) is linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). The CEFR describes language ability on a scale of levels from A1 for beginners up to C2.The incorporation of the CEFR demonstrates:- the validity of our language programme- facilitates students' understanding of the level they achieve- logical progression through levels.Knowledge of the CEFR enhances:- students' engagement with the language learning experience- students' motivation and progress during their experience abroad;- educational and occupational mobility thanks to the transferability of the CEFR system.

Objectives

This module introduces students to the Italian language and it focuses on the acquisition of linguistic knowledge in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) up to A2 level (CEFR), developing competence and a degree of accuracy when using the language in a limited range of contexts. It also provides an opportunity to practice the language with native speakers, through an internal language exchange programme.

Learning outcomes
• Students will be able to use and understand written and spoken Italian with some competence in a variety of contexts, up to the A2 level of competence (CEFR);
• On successful completion of this module, Beginners' Italian 2, students will:
• have a more in depth grounding in the principal constructions of Italian grammar and the basic Italian vocabulary in the topics covered.
• be able to use and understand written and spoken Italian with some competence in a variety of contexts.
• have a correct pronunciation and intonation; be able to read an elementary text, containing dates, cardinal and ordinal numbers.
• further be able to extract accurately key information from audio and visual material.
• - demonstrate an awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between Italian and English.


Syllabus

This module, intended to follow Beginners Italian 1, will:
a) complete the study of the basic rules of Italian grammar, including more advanced constructions, such as the use of the Imperfect and Future tenses.
b) give further practice in reading and listening in Italian.
c) give further practice in the comprehension of spoken Italian, at an increasingly more sophisticated level.

Private study

Written work: at least 3 hours a week of independent work; revision of class material and workbook exercises.
Oral work: at least 3 hours a week ; independent work, attendance to the Drop-in session and a language exchange programme.
