Objectives

By the end of this module, students should:
- be aware of a variety of approaches and perspectives which are available to those conducting legal research;
- be capable of formulating appropriate and relevant research questions;
- be able to design a research strategy appropriate to carrying out an independent research project;
- be able to select the research methods appropriate to the collection and analysis of data or evidence relating to the research question;
- have become familiar with the opportunities (and limitations) provided by on-line research;
- be able to use with confidence the various relevant library and online resources.

Syllabus

The course focuses on the mechanics of the research process - how to formulate research questions, design research strategies and generally go about the process of 'researching'. Some sessions of the course are devoted to exploring some of the different perspectives and approaches available to researchers. These sessions will illuminate how such different theoretical and methodological approaches can be operationalised, thus continuing the practical focus of the course.
