Module summary

This is an opportunity for experienced creative writers to develop an extended piece of writing: a collection of short stories, poems, the beginning of a novel or script, perhaps even a graphic novel, or a web-based story.You may have an idea for a creative project that you've always wanted to try, but also feel that you would benefit from being part of a group of like-minded people, frequently giving and receiving feedback on projects in progress, with the guidance of an experienced creative writing tutor.This module is an opportunity to develop your writing skills through a lively and dedicated workshop. You will complete a substantial piece of creative writing of your choice. And you will be surrounded by people who, like you, are excited about writing and creating new work.The module is assessed wholly by coursework and requires your active and regular attendance and participation.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to provide the opportunity to produce an extended piece of creative writing in a chosen genre. It will enable students to produce, develop and revise imaginative writing to a professional standard and participate effectively in peer-reviews and tutor-led writing workshops. It will also help students demonstrate independence in their writing and an understanding of the nature and purpose of the workshop and peer feedback as a feature of creative writing pedagogy. They will learn to identify and critically evaluate writing techniques and conventions and effectively employ a range of formal techniques for writing, as well as extending their knowledge, critical understanding and practical experience of writing. They will have expanded upon critical reading skills in relation to their own writing, that of other students, and work by published authors to enable production of a substantial piece of creative work. Finally, the reflective work will enable students to articulate their creative process and themes and ideas in their work as a professional writer would.

Syllabus

The syllabus will cover areas such as:
- Creating personal development plans and using these effectively to navigate the creative process
- The development and uses of a reflective blog
- Considering the pace and progression of collections of writing and/or longer pieces such as narrative poems, full-length scripts and novels
- Establishing peer review techniques
- Effectively employing structure to both the creative practice and the creative project
- The importance of self-directed learning and creative development
- The completion of a substantial creative writing project

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Peer feedback is an intrinsic part of this module and there will be regular small group feedback sessions throughout the module. You will reflect weekly in an online journal, which is not formally assessed but will be monitored by the tutor and commented on periodically. This will inform the creation of your reflective blog. In Week 7, you will be expected to submit half a draft of your creative work and blog for written feedback. This will be provided by the tutor within two weeks and there will be an opportunity to discuss this in your tutorial. Your tutor will also give verbal feedback within sessions. This will help you decide how to revise your work for the assignment.
