Pre-requisite qualifications

120 credits passed at level 1, with an average grade of at least 57 (with many exchange partner institutions requiring a higher grade average), plus at least 100 credits passed at level 2. For students wishing to study in a non-English speaking institution competence in that language would normally be expected at or above threshold level (European Common Reference Framework for Languages level B1) or as required by the host institution.

Objectives

This module aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop intercultural competency through immersion in a new cultural context and to develop critical skills that will enhance employability in an increasingly globalised world.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module studnets will be able to:
- Better understand new cultural contexts demonstrated through critical observation and development of intercultural skills.
- Demonstrate an awareness of international cultural practices shown through greater flexibility in interpreting and being able to adapt to new and challenging contexts.
- Apply critical skills related to employability; demonstrated through greater resourcefulness and ability to problem solve more dynamically in an international context.
- Critically reflect on a range of international experiences as a result of enhanced global citizenship.

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of the module students will be able to:

Transferable
- Demonstrate and further develop culturally-sensitive critical thinking skills to new contexts such as; problem solving, adaptability, reasoning and evaluative skills.
- Utilise honed foreign language skills (in exchanges where the language is not English) or a heightened ability to work/study with peers from a range of international backgrounds in a culturally-informed manner.

Subject specific
- Demonstrate a deeper knowledge of the international context of business demonstrated through modules studied at a partner institution.
- Develop a greater awareness of the complexities of interculturality and the role that culture plays in a variety of contexts.

Syllabus

The syllabus will vary according to the destination. In some partner institutions it will be possible to incorporate a short internship into the year abroad. In others, language acquisition will be the main emphasis. In many institutions the assessment of modules involves significant elements of international teamwork.
Specific details should be arranged with the host institution and are subject to the approval of the Study Abroad Tutor. Where students are not following a programme of study prescribed by the host institution the formal expectation is that students will study about 50% of the required total credit load in Business School subjects. The remaining required credit load should be taken in subjects which enhance the student's understanding of the culture, history, native peoples, geography, language and/or literature of the host country.

A full academic workload is defined by the host institution. Modules should normally be taken from the equivalent of levels 2 or 3 at the host institution (this is usually level 3 or 4 in the USA). If the language of instruction is English students will normally be required to pass a set of approved modules equivalent to at least 80% of the credit load of a host institution 'home' full-time student. If the language of instruction is not English students will normally be required to pass a set of approved modules equivalent to at least 50% of the credit load of a host institution 'home' full-time student .
