Module summary

This module covers the underlying principles and the application of ultrasound imaging for use in hospitals and the biomedical research environment.

Objectives

To provide an appreciation and understanding of the physical principles underpinning medical ultrasound and its main clinical applications.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, you should be able to:

- Explain the principles of ultrasound image formation;
- Identify and describe the limitations behind how an ultrasound image is formed;
- Identify and analyse the main clinical applications ultrasound;
- Recognise the situations in which ultrasound imaging is likely to be of value;
- Critically describe and evaluate the role of ultrasound relative to other imaging modalities;
- Assess novel methods of ultrasound imaging and carry out an appraisal of their likely clinical benefit.

To provide an appreciation and understanding of the physical principles underpinning medical ultrasound and its main clinical applications.


Syllabus

- The formation of ultrasound images based on the pulse-echo principle and various assumptions is described.
- The understanding of the foundation of the modality leads to an appreciation of its strengths as well as the limitations on resolution, access and operator dependence.
- Specific clinical areas: Obstetrics, Vascular Surgery, and Upper Abdominal imaging are used as examples.
- Recent and future developments are discussed using the same analysis. These include 3 and 4-D scanning, harmonic imaging, pre-clinical ultrasound and ultrasound contrast agents (microbubbles).
- Safety and legislation in ultrasound imaging.

Private study

Independent learning to supports formative tasks, and prepare for the summative examination and produce the summative essay.

Substantive private study to complete the in course assessment and to prepare the student for the final examination. It is expected that the students will undertake independent learning on areas of ultrasound, specifically physical principals and terminology that are critical to ultrasound but they may not have come across before. The reading list provides adequate reference material for this. All lectures have supplementary problem sheet (a series of 10 or so questions about the material in that lecture) and it is expected that the student’s independently work through this before the next lecture. A forum is set up on the VLE to allow students to ask questions and engage with the lecturers and other students about the course material.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored through question and answer sessions that will take place during each lecture, or through formative tasks which will be implemented post lecture, such as the use of problem sheets covering basic questions that week’s material.
