Module summary

This is an online module (there are no face to face lectures) so it does not appear on the module timetable.This module gives an introduction to ways in which psychological theory and research have been applied to sport and exercise settings.It considers issues such as:- why people exercise (or not!); motives for, and benefits of, exercise and sport- how sport settings can be used to research behaviour in stressful circumstances and the components of typical mental preparation programmes to support sport performance.

Objectives

This module aims to provide an overview of key concepts in 'Sport and Exercise Psychology'. Students will be introduced to a range of information within this discipline.

Learning outcomes
The general aim of this module is to provide a general overview and introduction to some of the diverse topics covered by the discipline of Exercise and Sport Psychology.

Objectives: on completion, students should be able to:
(a) show awareness of, and describe a wide range of topics covered by Exercise and Sport Psychology
(b) identify and describe a range of major psychological issues linked to optimal sport performance
(c) demonstrate the capacity to describe and justify components of a mental training package to aid sports performance.

Skills outcomes
Flexible / Self-directed learning; Critical thinking; Time management; Information identification, access, gathering, collation and assimilation of knowledge.
Problem-directed planning (intervention) - application of theoretical and research knowledge to applied problems.


Syllabus

Outline nature of sport and exercise psychology
- Exercise component: Physical activity vs Exercise, Exercise as a volitional behaviour, Motives to exercise, Exercise adoption and adherence, Health benefits of exercise, Attitudes and beliefs on exercise
- Sport psychology component: Motivation, Self-esteem, Self-confidence and efficacy, Attributions, Stress, Anxiety and performance, Peak performance and Mental preparation/Psychological Skills Training.

Private study

The module is delivered, monitored and assessed mainly online. The standard time for 10 credit modules is applied as a guide but students will be completely flexible in terms of the time invested and when they complete the module Unit (Topic area).
However, guidance will be offered in the associated module materials with regard to expected time investment and management.
- 50 hours: Reading online material (Unit content, reading lists and web-sites)
- 50 hours: Reading and accessing materials, creation of psychological skills training programme, completing formative self-assessment tasks, preparing and answering formative online exercises and preparation for MCQ assessment.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- This online module is based on self-directed learning therefore when each student reaches the end of a Unit (topic area) there will be a formative assessment based on Unit content. Therefore, the timing of this assessment will be governed by the rate at which students will be completing Units.
- Students will also outline a psychological skills training programme for a sports person with justification of components.
- Online discussion room and email contact with tutor will also be available.
