Objectives
To give students a comprehensive insight into the complex relationship between politics, policy and disabled people and to provide them with the necessary tools to critically evaluate the changing context of a range of welfare provision and practices for disabled people and their families.Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the development of policy responses to the 'problem' of disability.
2. Recognise the complex connections between politics and policy.
3. Review ways in which the modern disability category is created through social policy.
4. Critically evaluate key concepts and theories in social policy that inform responses to disabled people.
5. Assess the ability of social policy to create the change needed by disabled people.
6. Provide a sophisticated appraisal of the role of disabled people’s activism in creating change.
Syllabus
The module will focus on the interface between social policy, politics and disabled people. Topics covered will include: the politics of disablement and its influence on social policy; disability and the family; education and inclusion; unemployment, work and disabled people; disability, poverty and benefits; health and social support services; the built environment; leisure and social relationships; disability culture; and citizenship and rights. Particular attention will be paid to the politicisation of disability by disabled people and their organisations, and the changing character of disability policy.
