Objectives

1. demonstrate an understanding of the academic standards embedded in geology syllabuses in Secondary Education;
2. apply the understanding from (1) to the processes of learning and teaching in the Secondary School environment;
3. design and deliver a geological project to secondary school pupils appropriate to the specifications of the school syllabus;
4. demonstrate the ability to work in collaboration with teaching staff in secondary education;
5. critically reflect on the effectiveness of teaching methods employed;
6. evaluate a project in terms of the pupil response.

Syllabus

This module provides an opportunity for level 3 students to apply their geological background creatively to teaching secondary school pupils. The benefits to the students are first hand experience of the secondary school environment including experience of curricula, delivery techniques and collaboration with experienced teaching staff. The module facilitates original and enthusiastic approaches to delivery coupled with the opportunity to raise the profile of the earth sciences. Benefits to the school include help with teaching, development and enrichment of curricula.
