Module summary

To undertake a short, realistic, industrially- and/or academically-relevant, individual project (using a legacy dataset), and to prepare a technical project report to a 'client' as would be done professionally.

Objectives

The objective of the module is for a student to undertake, a realistic, industrially- and/or academically-relevant, individual case study (albeit on a small scale), and to prepare a technical report to a 'client' as they would have to do professionally.

Learning outcomes
As well as generic independent working skills (literature search, time management, commercial relevance, reporting), the project will reinforce (and potentially extend) scientific and technical knowledge in one area of the taught-course content already delivered.


Syllabus

The general sequence of work will be:
- literature review
- workstation-based data handling
- interpretation and critical assessment
- report preparation and presentation
- with the exact details being variable depending on project dataset.

It may be desirable for the student to attend (but not take for assessment), some or all of various Level 2 and/or Level 3 taught modules, in support of the topic being studied in this Module.

Private study

The student will be required to do a literature review (to give a rationale and context for the project), analyse data (using industry-standard software), then interpret and critically assess the outcomes, all leading to an evidence-based outcome to the task and preparation of a formal report.

Note that the module is structured – in terms of equivalent hours – as though it were being done full-time and exclusively, for which a period of 4 weeks is appropriate.

However, given the actual schedules for this cohort, and their need also to revise for re-sit exams, we intend to run this PGD case study over a period of roughly 8 weeks starting alongside the MSc cohort.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

8 academic tutorials (including review of structure/outline of project report); nominally, 2 per week for 4 weeks - BUT in practice we intend this to be spread over 8 weeks.
