Module summary

This module introduces students to the core elements of environmental projects as well as the more practical aspects such as responding to tenders and calls, developing proposals and implementing environmental projects. The module includes practical exercises as well as guest lectures from environmental consultants working on the field. As part of this module, students will work in groups to develop a proposal in response to a tender allowing them to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive as a sustainability consultant.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to ...
• Understand the mechanisms of developing and managing an environmental project
• Evaluate and respond appropriately to tenders and calls
• Understand client and stakeholder management concepts in the environmental arena
• Developing proposals into projects: proposal and budget development and management
• Develop proposal into projects: people and resources use

Learning outcomes
• Understand the purpose of environmental projects and contracts
• The mechanisms for developing, scoping and managing an environmental project
• How to develop a project proposal in response to environmental tenders and calls, including creating limits to scope
• Law and contractual considerations
• How to manage client and stakeholder relationships
• That environmental consultancy projects are fulfilled by applying and managing resources through effective contract and project management processes

• Overview of environmental projects and contracts types
• The project process - from idea to invoice
• The basics of client management and business development
• Responding to tenders and calls: proposal development and writing and presentation skills
• Environmental law and contractual considerations
• Understanding time and resource management, with environmental case studies
• Budgets and billing
• Managing the project in the environmental arena
• Practical project - development of a project proposal, costs and expected outcome of a consultancy project in an environmental case study
