Module summary

This module will explore the role of medicine and nutrition while examining the health benefits of exercise. Students will gain a critical understanding of sports medicine and the nutritional and practical dietary needs for those involved in sport and for maintenance of health.

Objectives

This module recognises the need for students on Sport and Exercise Science degree schemes to have an understanding of the role of medicine and the nutritional needs of those involved in a range of sports and exercise activities. This is placed in the context of promoting healthy lifestyles to those involved in competitive sport, the general population and potential for prevention or rehabilitation in specific disease populations.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
- integrate the theoretical aspects of medicine, health and nutrition with the applied nature of Sport and Exercise Science;
- assess the sports medicine needs of individuals engaged in a range of physical activities;
- offer basic nutritional advice to healthy/diseased people in relation to their sporting/exercise activity;
- advise on healthy living practices for a variety of individuals and contexts.

Skills outcomes
Students will be engaged in critical analysis, and will gain an understanding of working with athletes and the general population in relation to medicine, nutrition and health. They will practice communicating potentially complex scientific information to diverse audiences and gain some understanding of planning for intervention.


Syllabus

- Principles of Public health policy;
- The role of physical activity and exercise, in the prevention and rehabilitation of cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic diseases;
- Nutrition and its relationship to health and rehabilitation;
- Pitch-side medicine provision;
- The role of physiotherapy in sport;
- Management of sporting injuries on and off the field of play;
- The role of nutrition in enhancing sport performance.
