Pre-requisite qualifications
Open to Doctors (GMC registered), Physiotherapists (Health and Care Professions Council / Chartered Society of Physiotherapy), Sports Therapists or Sports Trainers (British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers). We may consider Sport & Exercise Science graduates with suitable PG experience, or those holding a relevant S&C qualification (MSc or National Strength and Conditioning Association / UK Strength and Conditioning Association accreditation).Co-requisites

Module summary
The risk of MSK problems increases with age, and sporting activity, this module provides essential background information needed to recognise and treat both acute and chronic MSK conditions. Key structural and functional aspects of upper and lower limbs will be explored, and understanding developed to allow an evaluation of common injuries and dysfunction.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- recognise key structures relevant to sports activity;
- assess the functional capacity of key anatomical structures;
- gain experience in time management, self-directed learning, and on-line resource access;
- gain experience in effective working practices for teams in a clinical setting.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should have provided evidence of being able to:
L1. Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of key structures relevant to musculoskeletal function, as well as define the functional capacity of key anatomical structures;
L2. Summarise understanding in these areas and evaluate aspects most likely to incur injury/dysfunction;
L3. Demonstrate an understanding of specialised knowledge in regional MSK disciplines;
L4. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the connections between the key disciplines that underpin musculoskeletal medicine;
L5. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the acute responses of the human body as applied to exercise and physical activity participation, in particular the anatomical and physiological changes, as well as acute maladaptive responses leading to injury;
L6. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the fundamentals of rehabilitation based on these principles.

A member of the academic or clinical teaching staff will be allocated as tutor to the group, and will meet with students twice during the module to assess progress, discuss issues arising, and set objectives for the next study period.Students will have the opportunity to self-assess progress by means of formative MCQ assessments at strategic points in the module, based on suggested reading material and on-line resources available.
