Module summary
This module provides application of specific knowledge and a structure for practical skill development for preliminary evaluation of Diagnostic Images.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate mastery in providing a preliminary evaluation of diagnostic images relevant to a negotiated area of imaging / clinical practice.Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an in-depth specialist knowledge of relevant normal and abnormal appearances;
- Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of relevant image classification schemes and preliminary evaluation;
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of how imaging findings affect clinical management
- Critically reflect on own practice within the context of local and national performance standards, where appropriate.
Skills outcomes
In relation to the student's negotiated area of imaging/clinical practice, on completion of this module students will be able to:
- critically evaluate the technical and diagnostic quality of radiographic images; critically appraise radiographic images and identify and characterise areas of potential abnormality/pathology;
- critically evaluate and describe and / or interpret radiographic imaging observations in order to categorise abnormal appearances
- synthesise radiological and clinical information into an examination report and make recommendations for additional investigations and / or further management where appropriate
Syllabus
Physical contributors to the medical image; image artefacts.
Radiographic image interpretation
Normal, abnormal and pathological appearances; Correlation of anatomy, physiology & pathology with imaging appearances.

Private study to include: literature searches, seminar and assessment preparation, independent supporting investigation and critical evaluation of literature for summative assessment; maintenance of clinical learning record.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will undertake a formative EDIE and will receive detailed feedback on their performance with advice re: how to improve.Peer and tutor feedback also given in case study discussions, assessment preparation seminars/practicals and tutor feedback on draft assignments.
