Module summary

This module will introduce students to the principles of research and evidence based clinical practice.It will equip students with the knowledge and skills to develop a research, service evaluation or practice development proposal for investigating a clinical problem in an area of diagnostic imaging relevant to their own professional practice.

Objectives

Provide an opportunity for students to develop an understanding of research, service evaluation or practice development methodologies that underpin evidence based practice and explore how quantitative and qualitative data can be collected and analysed.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Identify, develop, and critically evaluate a researchable problem relevant to health and social care practice
Articulate a researchable problem as a succinct study question
Demonstrate critical appraisal skills when evaluating research literature related to a study question
Design an appropriate research study and analysis plan to investigate a researchable problem relevant to health or social care practice
Identify and critically appraise limitations of research studies

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to
Critically appraise literature
Critically evaluate and understand different research methodologies


Syllabus

Identifying investigable problems
Literature review - searching, critical appraisal, data extraction, synthesis and critical analysis
Research, service evaluation and practice development projects:
methodologies currently used in clinical imaging practice;
qualitative, quantitative and systematic review project designs;
sampling and recruitment strategies;
principles and methods for quantitative and qualitative data collection;
ethics, governance and project approval

Private study to include: literature searches, seminar and assessment preparation, independent supporting investigation and critical evaluation of literature for summative assessment.
