Module summary
This module extends the concept of sustainable analysis via the full lifecycle concept of a product introduced in DESN1381 Fashion Lifecycles 1. In this module the sustainability of fashion products and the industry is explored for the garment manufacturing, distribution, usage and end of life stages of the lifecycle. The module provides the technical foundation for understanding these stages of a fashion product and supports the programme themes of environment, society, business and culture.Objectives
This modules follows on from DESN1381 and will introduce students to the fashion garment manufacturing process and the subsequent post production stages of the product lifecycle – from distribution to end of life.The effect that the user can have on the environmental impact of fashion products will be investigated.
Again the module will introduce the idea that decisions made at every stage of the fashion lifecycle can have an effect on the sustainability of a product.
In addition students will explore the complex world of environmental legislation and start to use methods for measuring the impact of products on the environment.
Learning outcomes
Students who have successfully completed the module will:
1. have a basic understanding of the fashion supply chain and its effects on the environment;
2. be able to describe the commonly used garment production processes;
3. be familiar with the environmental impact of a product during the rest of its lifecycle (distribution, use and end-of-life);
4. be aware of end-of-life options for a fashion product;
5. have knowledge of relevant legislation;
6. have knowledge of, and be able to utilise, simple lifecycle tools;
Skills outcomes
Be able to perform a basic life cycle analysis of a fashion product
Syllabus
Continuing on from DESN1381 the students will be introduced to the basic methods of garment production and their post-production lifecycle. The issue of globalisation will be considered and the subsequent effect that distribution may cause will be reviewed. The effect of the end-user will be considered, concentrating on their use of the product and disposal at end-of-life. Relevant environmental legislation will be introduced.
There will be an opportunity for students to use lifecycle tools to compare fashion products.
At every stage the effect that decisions made can have on the performance and on the social and environmental impact of a product will be considered.
