Module summary

This module follows on from aspects of sociology and psychology in year 1. It links to year 3 modules PPD3/Communication which deals with stress and anxiety, Illness and Wellbeing and Student Projects. You will focus on the social, cultural, psychological and environmental factors that impact on health and wellbeing, including issues relevant to patient care. In particular you will consider behavioural theories and techniques in understanding health behaviours and managing patients with dental anxiety will be explored. You will be introduced to evidence-based practice and the skills to find and appraise published evidence.Unless your programme is designed to be delivered fully online, your programme and modules will be delivered predominantly on campus. These teaching activities will be supported by the use of digital tools to enhance your learning and experience. The catalogue provides details of your module and the teaching methods used to deliver your module (for example, lecture, seminar, tutorial, practical). You will be kept informed of any proposed changes to the content and delivery of your modules as described in the module catalogue and we’ll make sure you understand and agree the reasons for any changes before they are introduced.

Objectives

This module will:
- give you opportunities to understand aspects of social sciences related to dentistry, evidence-based practice,
psychological models and theories in the management of dental anxiety.
- allow you to undertake literature searches which will allow you to understand how to develop search strategies.
- enable you to understand and identify the quality of evidence and how to critically apprise scientific papers.
- will address the following General Dental Council learning outcomes:
- be familiar with the social, cultural and environmental factors which contribute to health or illness
- be familiar with social and psychological issues relevant to the care of patients.
- be competent at managing fear and anxiety with behavioural techniques (and empathising with patients in stressful
situations).

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the students will be able to:
1. Identify health trends and demonstrate appreciation of how psychological and social factors may affect health, illness and
its treatment.
2. Apply social/psychological theories/models to patient care.
3. Describe and explain dental anxiety and behavioural treatments.
4. Demonstrate an awareness of the strategies used to critically appraise published evidence.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will have the opportunity to explore issues introduced within lectures during seminar sessions. Students will be encouraged to ask questions and gain formative feedback directly from a tutor. Tutors will facilitate practical sessions such as critical appraisal of evidence and literature searching giving students direct feedback.
