Module summary

In this module you will further undertake research-based learning with the central focus being your acquisition of research skills necessary to progress to study at M-level.You will have learning and teaching related to clinical statistics, critical appraisal, research ethics and systematic searching of the scientific literature.You will undertake a group project involving a relatively complex clinical case or situation. You will be expected to explore the literature in depth and summarise your findings.Unless your programme is designed to be delivered fully online, your programme and modules will be delivered predominantly on campus. These teaching activities will be supported by the use of digital tools to enhance your learning and experience. The catalogue provides details of your module and the teaching methods used to deliver your module (for example, lecture, seminar, tutorial, practical). It does not necessarily provide you with information about the mode of delivery for specific learning activities on your module (whether these will be on campus or delivered digitally). Information about the delivery mode for learning and teaching activities for your modules will be published in the timetable and in the Minerva area for your modules. We sometimes need to adapt our teaching to take account of developments in the subject, in response to new research and current affairs for example, and on occasion we may need to adapt our delivery modes too. You will be kept informed of any proposed changes to the content and delivery of your modules as described in the module catalogue and we’ll make sure you understand and agree the reasons for any changes before they are introduced.

Objectives

The aim of this module is for the students to acquire the research-related skills of systematic literature searching, statistical analysis, critical appraisal and interpretation of evidence expected of a graduate. Students will build on the research led teaching delivered earlier in the programme of study and prepare them for participation in a Master‘s level research project.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research skills including critical appraisal, statistical analysis and interpretation of the different types of evidence which underpin evidence-based dentistry.

2. Understand the importance of ethical practice in relation to research.

3. Formulate a systematic search and summary of the scientific literature related to clinical practice.

The examination will compose of a combination of MCQ and SAQ style questions related to medical statistics and critical appraisal. Prior to the examination students will be provided with a research paper. One third of the marks available for the examination (25% of the overall module marks) will be derived from questions in relation to this paper. The written exam will assess learning in relation to any areas of modular learning outcomes 1 and 3. The exam is non-compensatable.
