Module summary

The CMS2 module will run from term 4.3 to term 5.1. This module draws together and builds upon a diverse range of topics covered in the first three years of the BChD. Programme and is tightly linked to CMS1 module in terms 4.1. and 4.2. It includes aspects of Pathology & Medical Microbiology, Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Complementary & Alternative Medicine, Accident & Emergency Services, Medical Emergencies, Infection Control, Biomedical Sciences, Behavioural Sciences, Oral Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Oral Microbiology, Oral Surgery plus Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery & Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Core principles are used to underpin understanding of CMS in an applied way. The key to success in this module is the ability to gain insight and understanding of the issues covered to inform clinical decision-making relevant to the circumstances of each patient you care for.Unless your programme is designed to be delivered fully online, your programme and modules will be delivered predominantly on campus. These teaching activities will be supported by the use of digital tools to enhance your learning and experience. The catalogue provides details of your module and the teaching methods used to deliver your module (for example, lecture, seminar, tutorial, practical). We sometimes need to adapt our teaching to take account of developments in the subject, in response to new research and current affairs for example, and on occasion we may need to adapt our delivery modes too. You will be kept informed of any proposed changes to the content and delivery of your modules as described in the module catalogue and we’ll make sure you understand and agree the reasons for any changes before they are introduced.

Objectives

The course aims to consider the principles, concepts and mechanisms, which are necessary for the safe and appropriate practice of dentistry over a lifetime, within the context of Clinical Medical Sciences (CMS).

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
-Demonstrate insight into how the oral health care team fits within the delivery of overall health care;
-Demonstrate insight in to the importance of successful professional relationships with other healthcare workers to enhance patient care;
-Demonstrate insight into relevant aspects of systemic diseases and conditions and their management, in patients and members of the oral health care team, which may influence appropriate oral health care provision;
-Demonstrate insight into relevant aspects of orofacial diseases and conditions that do not primarily involve either the dentition or periodontium and initiate appropriate management;
-Demonstrate insight into the impact of the patient's social and general circumstances on appropriate oral health care provision;
-Demonstrate the ability to identify, interpret and apply sources of information relevant to CMS in the context of healthcare provision in the dental setting;
-Demonstrate the ability to make appropriate judgements and decisions related to CMS in the context of healthcare provision in the dental setting;
-Demonstrate insight into the range of clinical science and imaging services available and how these are used to inform clinical decision-making;
-Demonstrate insight into the principles of pharmacology, therapeutics and drug information and application of this insight to the clinical care of patients;
-Recognise and manage appropriately, patients who become unwell in the dental practice;
-Recognise their own limitations with regards to CMS in the context of healthcare provision in the dental setting.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Progress will be formally monitored through the Clinical Diary of DGH patients and the end of module (term 5.1) written assessments (Subject to availability in Covid recovery)
Student attendance and progress during specific parts of the module (e.g. lectures and placements) is also monitored.
