Module summary

Are you thinking about language teaching at some point in your career? Want to keep up with the latest in theory and practice in technology-enhanced language learning (TELL)? Want to learn how to make materials and activities motivating and interesting? In this module we look at the use of ICTs in language teaching and learning. You will have the opportunity to gain practical experience of designing language learning lessons, activities and materials that make use of ICTs. You will experience a variety of digital tools for language learning and teaching.The module is taught in weekly, 2-hour sessions throughout semester 2. Sessions are hands-on, with demonstrations of particular uses of technology for language learning. The assessment asks you to design a lesson and/or some materials using digital technology for language learning, and to write an assignment in which you discuss your rationale for designing the lesson/materials and how they would promote learning. There are no pre-requisites for the module other than an interest in language education and digital technology.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should:
- have developed their knowledge and understanding of how digital technologies may be used to support language learning, teaching and assessment
- have developed their knowledge of a range of technology-based materials and tools available to classroom language teachers, in terms of design, preparation, selection and evaluation
- have developed a basic understanding of contexts in which TELL is located including informal as well as formal learning contexts

Learning outcomes
1. Students will gain knowledge (to an extent appropriate for those at the beginning of a career) about theoretical perspectives underpinning the use of technology for language learning and teaching.
2. They will also gain knowledge of a range of digital tools that may be used to support language learning and teaching.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Tutors will conduct formative assessment and monitoring student progress throughout the module by
• Monitoring contribution to lectures, during lectures (ongoing classroom formative assessment)
• Informally assessing contribution to assignment tutorials
• Noting and assessing participation in discussion board activities
• Evaluating the contributions to the assignment presentation seminar and the group assignment tutorial
Students whose participation, progress and engagement raise concerns will be invited to attend an extra individual tutorial.
