Module summary

On this module, you will be developing your understanding of different genres of text by looking at features, structure and language used in texts of your discipline. You will develop the ability to write using academic style and conventions such as referencing, and conduct research into the genres of text used in your discipline. You will participate in a project and produce a report and presentation. You will also become more familiar with study in the UK HE context and start to develop a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities this brings.

Objectives

This module provides students with the opportunity to:
1. Meet the language requirements for progression onto Academic English for Postgraduate Studies (AEPS) Level 2.
2. Display emerging linguistic and literacy skills to a level that will enable them to, in most scenarios, communicate competently within the UK academic context at postgraduate level.
3. Develop an emerging awareness and understanding of the culture, context and discourse of postgraduate academic study in UK Higher Education.
4. Begin to develop autonomous and reflective skills, with an emerging cultural understanding of ethical academic practices.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have begun to develop:
1. A basic awareness of the use of written and spoken academic language to suit a clear communicative purpose through a restricted range of appropriate lexical and grammatical structures;
2. A basic awareness of academic genre, discourse and function; making some appropriate language choices in relation to audience and purpose at whole text, paragraph and sentence level; 
3. Some ability to follow academic conventions in both spoken and written tasks, such as referencing, beginning to synthesise sources and their own argument, meeting task requirements and building collaborative understanding;
4. A critical approach to their own work and the work of others through use of a small range of appropriate sources to begin developing a simple argument; 
5. An ability to critically reflect on their own learning and demonstrate awareness of resources and techniques they could employ to continue their own development;
6. The ability to communicate some awareness of the cultural and ethical issues of academic study within postgraduate academic study in UK Higher Education.


Syllabus

Indicative content may include the following topics: introduction to UK HE context, exploring Leeds University and your department, introduction to critical analysis, introduction and exploration of academic genre, skills practice and introduction to seminars and lectures, academic integrity and referencing, exploring academic style in formal texts, conducting research, introduction to research ethics, introduction to reflective writing, participating in a group project, writing a report and giving a presentation.

Private study

This is a full-time course. On average students will have 14 hours of tuition and 2 hours of consultations per week and will be expected to do an additional 4 hours of independent online study and 20 hours or more of private study each week.

The private study will include reading and preparing for seminars (approximately 12 hours), lectures (approximately 4 hours) and assessments (approximately 4 hours) per week using both online digital and print resources, and completing learning tasks.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students receive regular written feedback on writing tasks submitted through Turnitin. This allows them to improve their writing and language skills before they submit their summative assessments. Students are closely monitored throughout the research stage of the exploratory practice project and submit a draft before they submit their final report. This ensures that they are supported through every stage of the essay-writing process. As well as regular class activities in groups, students work in groups to prepare and deliver their group poster presentation, which forms part of their summative assessment.

Formative tasks include:
- Email to tutor (300 words)
- Screencast (5 minutes)
- Comparative analysis (250 words)
- Timed writing task (approx. 500 words)
- Listening tests
- Draft summary (approx. 500 words)
- Practice presentation (10-12 mins; 3-5 students)
