Module summary

This module is a fully online, part-time English language pre-sessional designed to support students who either do not meet the English language requirements for their chosen post-graduate programme, or who wish to gain a better understanding of the academic language and literacy practices in their area of study.

Objectives

This module provides students with the opportunity to:

1. Meet the language requirements of their future academic programme.
2. Display linguistic and literacy skills to a level that will enable them to communicate competently within their discipline specific academic context at post-graduate level.
3. Develop an awareness and understanding of the culture, context and discourse of academic study in the UK as well as within their own discipline.
4. Develop as autonomous, reflective learners, with a cultural awareness and understanding of ethical academic practices.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be developing their ability to:

1. Use written and spoken academic language to communicate clearly, including a wide range of lexis and appropriate structures used coherently, accurately and fluently.
2. Show awareness of subject specific genre, discourse and rhetorical function, making appropriate choices in relation to audience and purpose at whole text, paragraph and sentence level.
3. Use subject-specific academic conventions in both spoken and written tasks, such as referencing, citations, synthesising sources and their own argument, meeting task requirements, turn taking and building collaborative understanding.
4. Take a critical approach to their own work and the work of others through use of a range of sources, counter-argument and/ or evaluation; development of an argument with a clear position.
5. Critically reflect on their own learning and demonstrate awareness of resources and techniques they could employ to continue their own development.
6. Communicate an awareness of the cultural and ethical issues of academic study within their field.


Syllabus

On this module, you will develop your ability to think about an issue from a range of perspectives and come to your own conclusions. You will work on developing your understanding of, and ability to use academic English in both written and spoken communication. You will focus on synthesising secondary evidence to write a thematic paper. You will learn about the differences between spoken and written academic discourse and take part in online discussions and projects.

Private study

This is a part-time course that will require and support you to study independently, outside of the live online classes that happen each week. The bulk of the course will be through asynchronous learning that you complete in your own time, such as reading texts and watching videos, completing online homework tasks, writing assignments and self-reflections, and communicating with your fellow students. There will be feedback on each element of your study as well as video tutorials with your tutor and live classwork to keep you on track. You should expect to spend about 10 hours per week studying on this course.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- individual and then repeated group MCQs (with instant or semi-delayed feedback within class) on pre-class content x 5 per ‘term'
- in-class application exercises of content with peer and teacher feedback x each class (week 2-22)
- 5-minute asynchronous video dialogue with tutor each week
- reflective blog formative feedback by tutor x3 per ‘term' and by peers in student-selected sharing via asynchronous group activity x2
