Objectives
On completing this module, students should be able to:- Give a general overview, both verbally and written, of the neuroanatomy of the entire central and peripheral nervous systems
- Undertake a detailed anatomical examination of a human brain
- Recognise and describe the main subdivisions of the spinal cord, brainstem, cerebellum, diencephalon and cerebral hemispheres
- Compare and contrast the functional differences between areas of the central nervous system
- Give a detailed written account of numerous neurological pathways throughout the central nervous system and correlate these to specific clinical conditions
- Give a detailed written account of the embryological development of the brain and spinal cord and compare this to selected developmental abnormalities
- Recognise the major structural elements of the brain and spinal cord in both typical and atypical forms using a variety of medical images
- Integrate anatomical information derived from multiple diverse sources (e.g. dissections, radiological images and drawings)
- Critically evaluate published anatomical information
- Work independently and develop strategies to overcome unexpected problems encountered during an anatomical examination
- Apply neuroanatomical principles to solve clinically-relevant problems
Learning outcomes
On completing this module, students should have:
- Knowledge of the gross anatomy of the entire central and peripheral nervous system
- Detailed knowledge of the neuroanatomy relating to the spinal cord, brainstem, cerebellum, diencephalon and cerebral hemispheres.
Skills outcomes
Skills outcomes:
- Dissection and fine motor manipulation of surgical instruments
- Identification of gross anatomical structures
- Literature searching and the use of the primary literature to determine the current state of relevant anatomical knowledge
Syllabus
A 20 credit module for the BSc Clinical Anatomy programme which provides an opportunity to study the neuroanatomy of the central and peripheral nervous systems in detail.
Students will explore the brain by careful and extensive dissection conducted in small groups. Practical work in the dissection room will be supported by lectures as appropriate.
Regions to be covered will include: spinal cord, medulla oblongata, pons, midbrain, cerebellum, diencephalon, cerebral hemispheres, meninges, blood supply, ventricular system, cranial nerves and nuclei. Students will also cover a series of motor and sensory systems, including general sensation, olfactory, visual, auditory, vestibular, limbic, motor and autonomic.
Students will also study the embryological development of the brain and spinal cord (and what can happen when this goes wrong).

Preparation/follow-up for each practical session and lecture, preparation for written examination, preparation for spot tests.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Attendance at teaching sessions and engagement with the material will be monitored and collated during the practical sessions by the module manager. Student progress will be monitored by assessing the specimen being dissected throughout the module and informal verbal testing of student knowledge and understanding. Formative assessments for each practical session will be provided via the VLE. Completion will be prompted and monitored. If the module manager deems a student to be disengaging with the module or struggling with the content ad hoc meetings will be suggested and arranged to provide additional support. Details will be recorded and passed to the student's personal tutor and programme leader, where appropriate.
