Objectives

On completion of this module, students will be able to:
- analyse the upstream medium preparation strategies used in biochemical processes.
- predict the growth dynamics of living cells in batch and continuous mode bioreactors.
- predict and re-evaluate design parameters for rectifying any faults in upstream bioprocesses.
- evaluate the most widely used downstream unit operations of particle technology including particulate milling, mixing and granulation, and their performance including enriching product concentration.
- calculate the size and operational performance of particulate processing equipment such as mills, mixers and granulators.
- operate process equipment by performing laboratory experiments in distillation, fluidisation, and heat transfer.
- analyse experimentally obtained data, evaluate sources of error and compare findings to published literature.
- communicate experimental findings in the form of report writing.
- implement activity risk assessment and laboratory safety management protocols.

Learning outcomes
- Understand the principles of biochemical reaction and reactor engineering, the design and operations of upstream process to manufacture bio particulates.
- Understand the most widely used downstream unit operations of particle technology; equipment sizing and performance.
- Understand and be able to quantify the effect of processing steps on the state of the material being processed, and its transformation to the end product in terms of its composition, morphology and functionality.
- Have a knowledge and understanding of laboratory practice, and ability to operate bench scale chemical engineering process equipment.
- Be able to design, plan and undertake experimental work and critically interpret, analyse and report on experimental data.
- Understand the principles of risk assessment and of safety management, and be able to apply techniques for the assessment of laboratory hazards.

Syllabus

Semester 1: Experimental - students work in teams and undertake five experiments: packed tower gas absorption, cooling tower, continuous stirred tank reactor, distillation column and fluidised bed experiments. Individual reports are submitted for each experiment, in which the data gathered are critically analysed and conclusions are drawn.

Semester 2: Manufacturing processes, theories of upstream sterilisation processes, principles of batch and continuous reactor processes of current relevance for example pharmaceutical manufacturing, particulate materials characteristics and properties, powder flow, powder mixing and associated segregation, size reduction and enlargement of particles.
