Module summary

This module builds on the lifecycle assessment concepts introduced at Level 1 and presents new developments in materials and manufacturing processes that can significantly improve the sustainability of fashion products and the industry. The module considers mainstream solutions for sustainability as well as exploring the latest research for innovative new solutions for the industry. The module will consider the relative merits of best practices, technologies, initiatives and standard industry approaches to support the development of critical analysis skills.

Objectives

This module will review the environmental and social impacts of key processes involved in the conversion of raw materials into the finished product for fashion (clothing) products and then present new developments that can be used to minimise those impacts. New developments will be critically considered within the constraints of the business environment and the function of the product. Existing best practice and new innovative approaches to textile processes are included for raw materials, yarn and fabric production, coloration and finishing and garment manufacturing.

Learning outcomes
Students who have successfully completed the module will:
1. have developed their knowledge of important sustainable processes for the manufacturing of products
2. understand the environmental and social impacts associated with the key manufacturing processes
3. be able to apply critical analysis to information and research
4. be able to describe the complexity of the business environment and its impacts on decision making for sustainability
5. articulate the future needs of consumers, the industry and the wider societal needs associated with sustainability

Syllabus

The module will develop students’ knowledge about the environmental and social impacts for the key process that are used to convert raw materials into the finished product. These process account for the majority of impacts associated with fashion products.
The module will present current best practice and explore new emerging technologies and practises that can minimise the impact of the fashion industry within the context of product function, the consumer and business requirements.
This module will provide insights into the key processes of manufacturing including material production, spinning, fabric production, dyeing and finishing and aspects of garment making.
