Pre-requisite qualifications

Successful completion of East Asian Studies Chinese language year abroad in China. Students on a Joint Honours programme with Chinese may only take this module in Level 2. This module is not open to students who can already speak everyday Cantonese.

Module summary

Learn to speak basic Cantonese! The module covers the pronunciation, tones, grammar and vocabulary of Cantonese. Classes include dialogue, role-play, and learning from audiotapes. You will be able to conduct simple conversations in Cantonese at the end of the course. Suitable for non-native speakers of Chinese.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should:
- have mastered the pronunciation, tones and the basic sentence patterns of Cantonese;
- be able to conduct simple situational dialogues in Cantonese;
- be aware of some fundamental differences between Cantonese and Mandarin syntax and vocabulary;

Syllabus

The module is designed for students who have attained a good level of spoken and written Mandarin Chinese following successful completion of the Year Abroad in China. It covers the pronunciation, tones, basic grammar and vocabulary of Cantonese. Dialogues, role-play and audio tapes are used to develop oral and aural skills for everyday situations.
