Module summary

This module will provide research methods training in the area of digital education. It will prepare learners to be able to carry out a research project in the area of digital education from planning the project to finalising the project paper or report. The aim is two-fold: to prepare learners on the MA Digital Education for their dissertation; and to prepare learners to be able to carry out research in their professional settings.

Objectives

In this module learners will develop research skills which enable them to design and execute an empirical digital education research study. It will focus on the importance of data in digital education and professional learning settings, the theoretical, ethical and practical implications of carrying out a research study, as well as how to evaluate existing research studies, analyse data and present findings.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module you should be able to:

1. Discuss the underlying principles of education research design
2. Critically reflect on the relationships between components of educational research
3. Critically evaluate existing digital education research studies

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Each student receives formative feedback on their assignment plan and on their assignment draft of 3000 words. They also receive 2 x 0.5 hours tutorial for the module. Each student also receives formative feedback on each post seminar task.

Assessment Analyse and evaluate the research design and methodological approaches of two contrasting digital education empirical research papers of your choice. You should include consideration of: Research problem/gap Research questions/objectives Research design & methodological approach Ethical considerations Data collection and analysis methods Presentation & discussion of results The word count is maximum 6000 words. The assignment is to be submitted in a text-based format.
