Module summary

Foreign language skills can give a significant boost to your opportunities for employment and in your life as a whole. As a student at the University of Leeds, you are entitled to take a Language Centre foreign language discovery module in any year of study and gain formal academic credit for it. The emphasis in our teaching is on achieving practical communication in all of the four main language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Our teaching takes place in practical and interactive weekly classes of no more than 18 learners and uses the modern facilities and technology of the Language Centre, including our excellent Self Access Area.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to progress students from GCSE level to AS-level in the four skills, with an emphasis on oral communication.

On completion of this module students will be able to:
- handle lengthy conversations in familiar and unfamiliar settings, as long as the language used is relatively simple;
- be understood by native and non-native speakers without difficulties;
- express facts and opinions concerning their field of study; understand authentic short audio and video extracts concerning their field of study;
- produce longer pieces of writing concerning their field of study;
- understand and produce a limited range of business correspondence.

Students will also develop an understanding of the structure of the language and culture of the country(ies) where the language is spoken.

Syllabus

A post GCSE course which encourages communication in the target language. The study of grammatical structures and cultural awareness is incorporated into the language programme.

Self-study in the Self-Access Area is integrated into the monitoring and assessment. Self-study normally includes more than one of the following elements: work with designated CALL packages, videos, audio cassettes, live TV programmes and individual language programmes suited to self-study. The specific load of individual study work for students will be defined in the Scheme of Work for the course.

Topics/skills covered at this level include:
- dealing with more everyday formal and informal work situations
- giving and asking for instructions, and opinions
- using the target language in spoken and written modes to seek and gain employment
- presenting and explaining ideas and information.
