Module summary

This module is designed to equip students with the fundamental tools to study justice, including study skills, and legal theory.

Objectives

The key objective is to prepare students for the successful study of law as an academic discipline through the development of critical thinking skills within a jurisprudential context. This will cover expectations and demands of the degree; essential skills for effective study; and basic legal theory. A further objective will be to develop students from passive recipients of research materials and teaching content to proactive, engaged participants able to discuss subject content through recognising the value of research and problem solving.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate a range of key basic study skills including the ability to extract relevant jurisprudential issues from a reading or scenario and define and identify solutions; use IT to support research techniques and synthesise a range of research materials;
- apply appropriate terminology and legal reasoning to produce a coherent legal account of issues within the legal system;
- identify and discuss the different approaches adopted and underlying values attached to the interpretation of jurisprudential texts;
- demonstrate independent study skills.

Syllabus

This module builds upon the introduction to legal knowledge and skills that students learnt in LAW1201 Foundations of Law 1. They will use the grounding provided by that module to develop further foundational knowledge and skills that they will need for their legal education. Students will learn the following matters in depth:

Jurisprudence & the nature law

Theories of justice and personhood

Essay writing skills

Taken together, this module and LAW1201 provide students with the crucial legal knowledge and skills that they can use and hone over the course of their legal studies.
