Module summary
This module provides an introduction to sociology through an examination of some of the key issues in contemporary society. This will include using sociological theories and perspectives to identify and examine social problems and challenge fundamental assumptions. Students will be supported to develop the knowledge and skills needed to conduct research within a social sciences context.Objectives
To develop a sociological imagination and use this to examine contemporary issues within society and produce a research project.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, you will be able to;
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of some key sociological theories
2. Understand, adopt and apply a ‘sociological imagination’ to a key aspect of contemporary society
3. Examine the role and design of research within the social sciences
4. Design an appropriate research methodology focussing on a contemporary sociological issue

Syllabus
This module will support students to develop research skills in the sociological sciences through an exploration of key sociological topics including; social identity, inequality and poverty, health inequality, and the role of education in society. Theories on the causes and effects of crime will also be examined through consideration of social models of deviance. The role and form of ‘the family’ will be considered as well as looking at some sociological theories on childhood.
