Module summary
This module provides an introduction to human biology to support healthcare students in their transition into year 1 (level 1) of a range of healthcare degree, for example - Adult nursing, Child Nursing, Midwifery, Mental Health Nursing & Dental Hygiene.Objectives
To explore how the human body works including; different molecules and cell formation, tissue production, how the main organs and systems of the human body function.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, you will be able to;
1. Recognise the main components of the cell and cell membrane and describe their function.
2. Demonstrate an understanding key biochemical molecule (DNA, Carbohydrates and Proteins).
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the Circulatory, Respiratory, and Digestive system.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of Homeostasis, the Nervous and Reproductive system.
5. Explore a non-communicable disease, it’s etiology and therapeutic interventions.

Your will be supported to develop an understanding of how the human body works by exploring systems in the body including: the digestive system, the nervous system, the respiratory and circulatory systems. You will also examine human reproduction.
There will also be an opportunity to explore a human disease and the treatment options available.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will also be expected to engage in private study including assignment preparation, research, completion of ‘mock’ exams, and reading of core texts. This will include weekly independent homework tasks, which will incorporate formative self-assessment. Each task will constitute a key component of one of the module assignments, whilst the group revision and study group meetings will focus purely on final exam revision and preparation.Students can submit a first draft of their case study for Tutor feedback and development guidance.
