Module summary

This module will support you to develop the skills to use the University Library to identify, retrieve, read, interpret and analyse academic information and data in journals, books and online. You will also be supported to produce a literature review and present statistical data in an appropriate format.

Objectives

To support students to develop the skills to access, evaluate, critically analyse, process, and present information and data in an academic context.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, you will be able to;

1. Identify and utilise online databases, using the University Library search tool and other appropriate academic ‘search’ engines, to access different types of academic information, including data and statistical information

2. Demonstrate the ability to analyse and compare information sources on the same subject/topic

3. Identify and interpret academic data and statistics

4. Use Excel to produce data tables and illustrations

Syllabus

This module will develop the knowledge and skills needed to become information literate and data literate in preparation for degree level study.

It will equip students with the skills to access, process and present academic information, both in written format and numerically, and help them to develop analytical and critical reading skills, as well as the ability to interpret statistical information.

Students will search for appropriate academic information and data using the University’s library. They will be supported to interpret their sources and use them to construct academic writing in the form of a literature review. This will include critical analysis of the sources, including interpretation of relevant data.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative feedback will be provided through Q & A during the online taught lectures.

The seminar content will include opportunities to complete learning tasks designed to develop assignment knowledge and completion. This will also include reflection on homework tasks and independent study.

The 1hour supervision sessions will support students to identify the focus and structure of their literature review, as well as provide verbal feedback on one draft submission.
