Module summary

To develop an awareness and understanding of person-centred care and can describe the role of the nursing associate in the delivery of this. Develop an understanding of how behaviour, culture, socio-economic, family history and other factors impact on: Health and ill-health Have an understanding of appropriate and effective communication skills across a wide range of channels and with a wide range of individuals. Have an understanding of the importance of evidence-based professional practice in care delivery.

Objectives

Exercise personal responsibility and work independently within defined parameters of practice, taking the initiative in a variety of situations and performing a range of clinical and care skills consistent with the roles, responsibilities, and professional values of a nursing associate.

The teaching is delivered in week blocks which distributes the teaching over several days/weeks. Throughout the programme a combination of Seminars, Workshops and Tutorials are used to facilitate group discussions and active learning through tutor input.

Through the use of seminars, this module aims to provide the apprentice with the opportunity to explore theoretical concepts that underpin the fundamental skills required for clinical practice. The apprentice will be encouraged to complete guided study packages and blended learning and undertake relevant research to support the taught learning elements of this module.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, you will develop knowledge and an understanding of how to: 

1. Apply and promote evidence-based professional practice that places the individual and/or family/carer at the centre of care  

2. Display a professional and personal commitment to professional standards and ethical practice, consistently operating within national and local ethical, legal and governance requirements. 

3. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of person-centred care and can describe the role of the nursing associate in the delivery of person-centred care 

4. Discuss the importance of placing the individual at the centre of care and consider services from their point of view and/or that of their family’/carer’s and the need to support 

5. Describe the importance of managing appropriate, professional boundaries and relationships with patients and carers 

6. Demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for the role of a nursing associate 

7. Reflect on how behaviour, culture, socio-economic, family history and other factors impact on: Health and ill-health; Health outcomes; Population health and public health priorities, including Health Inequalities. 

8. Display appropriate and effective communication skills across a wide range of channels and with a wide range of individuals.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The apprentice will have the opportunity on initial registration to the programme to engage with the Kickstart programme. This will allow them to work through bespoke online academic skills content to familiarise themselves with the expectations of academic study. This will be supported by a taught face to face session. Formative feedback will be given to the apprentice's work, both on-line and in class.

The proposed changes to assessment will contribute to further formative assessment.
