Module summary

This module is for students who would like to learn about coaching and mentoring. It explores the role of coaching and mentoring for learning and development in a workplace or learning setting. You will learn about the theory and practice of coaching and mentoring and have chance to develop skills in these areas.

Objectives

The module aims to develop an understanding of the theory and practice related to coaching and mentoring in workplace or learning settings. Students are introduced to key debates and conceptual perspectives in these areas and encouraged to reflect critically on the way these approaches can support learning and development.

Students have the opportunity to develop coaching and mentoring skills through a range of interactive activities and critical reflection on their practice. Students are also encouraged to identify a coaching or mentoring relationship outside of the classroom to apply their coaching and mentoring knowledge and skills to a real situation and reflect on this experience.

The teaching is structured to address both knowledge and skills in these areas with interactive seminars including resources such as: coaching and mentoring scenarios, synchronous and asynchronous short lectures, links to videos and websites, coaching and mentoring skills sessions, quizzes, and discussion boards.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to :

LO1 Demonstrate a sound understanding of the rationale for and the approaches to coaching and mentoring within workplace or learning settings;

LO2 Critically evaluate the theories and models around coaching and mentoring;


LO3 Analyse the contextual and ethical issues concerned in coaching and mentoring;


LO4 Apply relevant concepts, knowledge, practical skills and approaches to their own coaching and mentoring practice;


LO5 Demonstrate advanced skills and competences and a reflective approach to coaching and mentoring.

Skills outcomes
Communication: through developing active listening skills, questioning styles, interactive-empathic skills important in the work with coachees.

Critical Thinking: from reflecting upon practice, considering theories that apply to your practice and from engaging in approaches to help coachees.

Ethical Awareness: anonymising references to people with whom you are conducting coaching and mentoring, as well as the institutions in which you/they are working.

Professionalism: through understanding ways in which coaching and mentoring can contribute to a more productive and enthusiastic business environment

Social/cultural sensitivity: through a better understanding of coachees’ social/cultural backgrounds and how these may impact upon reaching their potential.

Reverse mentoring, team coaching, remote mentoring

Interpersonal skills and ethics

The application of coaching and mentoring models and techniques

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Peer and tutor feedback will be integrated into seminars and particularly the practicals which will allow students to try out different techniques and receive constructive feedback in a safe environment. Feedback on plans or samples of written work is also provided.
