Module summary

Have you ever wondered how you developed into the person you are? This module aims to support you in understanding your current identity by conducting a critical self-reflection on your past lived experiences. You will gain skills in reflective writing to consider identity formation through an intersectional lens.

Objectives

This module aims to support you to reflect and analyse how your identity has developed over time, drawing upon lived experience data. Using an intersectional lens, your unique identity formation is then analysed drawing upon educational, psychological, and sociological theories. Focusing on an in-depth understanding of yourself within social and cultural contexts (e.g., education) should better equip you to consider the needs of others (such as within teaching and learning contexts).

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:  

1. Explore and analyse key debates in the construction of identity.

2. Reflect on a range of perspectives on identity and consider their implications in relation to identity formation within a social and cultural context.

3. Use an intersectional lens to critically analyse how identities are constructed.

4. Reflect upon societal norms and identify what influence othering may have on identity formation.

5. Conduct a critical self-reflection to identify and better understand identity formation.

Private study

Students will read a range of theories and perspectives focused on the formation of identity during their private study. They will also practice reflective writing during their independent learning time.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will receive formative feedback on two of their journal entries. There will also be draft feedback and tutorial support for a draft of the autobiographical report.
