Module summary

This module runs across two semesters and is designed to complement subject specific modules on your programme of study. It focuses on the skills and competencies required to enter the workplace as a practicing manager. It gives you the change to translate into practice some of the theories and knowledge gained on the programme as you work on practical activities as part of a mixed team. Throughout the module you will reflect on your own practice and consider how what you have learned and experienced has contributed to your management development. The emphasis is on individual and group practical activities and the module draws on input from a variety of sources including academic and external experts.

Objectives

The module aims to enable students to develop their academic potential, employability, global and cultural insight and understanding of what management entails, in order to enhance their potential to benefit business and society. It is designed to complement the subject specific study on the programme by providing the time and space to think about the practical application of management knowledge, and supports the development of academic skills, team working and self-reflection.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to critically evaluate:
- Management development and recognise the developmental needs of themselves and others
- The role of a manager and how management theory can be translated into practice
- Team working and team leadership and how to achieve outcomes through working with others



Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- Work effectively in teams to address management challenges
- Exhibit greater self-awareness and global and cultural insight
- Construct appropriate learning strategies for their future personal development initiatives including critical assessment of personal and interpersonal strengths and areas for improvement
- Develop a plan to engage with the employment market




Syllabus

The practice of management is a dynamic topic and this module will reflect the nature of this evolving field. As an indicative syllabus, topics may include:

- Development of academic skills for M-level study
- Assessment of personal strengths and areas for improvement
- Issues of management and leadership
- Working in mixed self-managing teams to meet practical outcomes
- Employability: preparing to compete in the job market

This will include a variety of activities, such as reading, watching videos, reflection and group work.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Interactive midpoint quiz with instantaneous written formative feedback. There will also be opportunities to receive formative feedback during the workshops.
