Module summary

This is a capstone module that provides students with an opportunity to bring together what they have learnt on the taught part of the programme by undertaking a major people or human resource analytics research project that they undertake independently with the guidance of an academic supervisor.

Objectives

The aim of the module is for students to learn the key concepts of business and management research methods and to plan, research and deliver a human resource analytics project. This is an independent research project based on the analysis of primary or secondary data that tackles problems that a human resource analytics team or consultants would undertake in practice. This could involve qualitative research drawing on interviews, focus groups, participant observation among other established qualitative methods or quantitative analysis using organisational data, sectoral or nationally representative data, or a combination of the two approaches. The module provides an opportunity to apply and synthesise knowledge and skills developed in the taught part of the programme.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:

1. Generate and refine appropriate research questions related to the fields of human resource management, work, and employment.
2. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of underlying theory in in the fields of human resource management, work, and employment.
3. Demonstrate understanding, evaluation, and application of relevant principles of research design and appropriate methodology using qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods.
4. Synthesise and critically review appropriate literature with referencing, and able to add own reflections and arguments into a coherent, well-supported argument.
5. Prepare accurate summary of technical information and of the project with simplicity and clarity and demonstrating competence in managing an original project work.

Syllabus

Indicative content:
1. Five taught sessions will introduce research methods and approaches not encountered through the Data Analytics and for Human Resources module (for example, realist reviews and evaluation, ethnography, qualitative interviews, systematic reviews, using secondary and primary research designs) and provide guidance on the development of a project idea.
2. Regular meetings with supervisor and documenting progress (for example, collection of data, systematic review of literature etc.) at each meeting.

Private study

Taught seminar sessions will aim to equip students with the basic understanding of research methodologies and quantitative and qualitative research methods for carrying out research in the field of human resources. The sessions will help students to identify a project, then under the guidance of a supervisor, students will be expected to undertake independent research in the form of a human resource analytics project, which could be quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods in focus, including:

- conducting a critical literature review
- formalising research questions
- identifying and justifying an appropriate methodology
- conducting research
- communicating the results in the form of the project report and identifying the actionable management insight that follows from the results.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be able to get formative and regular feedback through sharing initial drafts of key sections of their reports with their supervisor.
